Identification of School-Aged Patients Who May Have Missed Immunizations

Last Updated July 28, 2023

There is a significant decrease in uptake of required immunizations for school-aged children that poses a risk for increased vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks. Health care providers are encouraged to review their patient panel to determine which vaccines school-aged patients are eligible to receive to keep up to date with their immunization schedule.

OntarioMD has developed searches and queries for Accuro® EMR, OSCAR Pro EMR, and TELUS PSS EMR to aid clinicians in identifying patients aged 4-6 and 7-11 who may have missed vaccines. This initiative aims to streamline the process of locating individuals who require vaccination catch-up under the Immunization School Pupils Act (ISPA).

The queries search for the following criteria:

Patients aged 4-6 years inclusive missing one or more of the following:

  • 4 DTaP-IPV
  • 1 MMR
  • 1 Varicella
  • 1 MenC-C

Patients aged 7-11 years inclusive missing one or more of the following:

  • 5 DTaP-IPV
  • 2 MMR
  • 2 Varicella
  • 1 MenC-C

NOTE: It is important to verify the accuracy of the patient list, use clinical judgement to assess which vaccines should be administered, and to devise a plan to reach out to schedule appointments for school-aged children who require one or more vaccinations.
